Trump: I definitely do not want to impose secondary tariffs on Russia

Answering questions from journalists at the White House, US President Donald Trump said the following regarding a question about the possibility of imposing secondary sanctions on Russia:

I definitely do not want to impose secondary tariffs on Russia, but if they are imposed, it would not be good for them.

Responding with a 'no' to the question of whether his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin is at its “lowest point,” Trump expressed hope for reaching an agreement between Russia and Ukraine, stating that there is a “psychological deadline” for a ceasefire.

Previously, NBC News reported that the US leader had announced he would impose secondary tariffs on Russian oil exports if a deal could not be reached with Moscow to end the conflict in Ukraine. Trump had also threatened to ban Russian oil importers from doing business in the US if an agreement could not be reached.

Russia has repeatedly stated that it will cope with the intensifying sanctions pressure. Putin has noted that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy of the West, and that the sanctions have dealt a major blow to the entire global economy. According to Putin, the main goal of Russia's enemies is to make the lives of millions of people even worse.

At the same time, experts in Western countries have also repeatedly expressed the view that the sanctions are ineffective.
