Trump: I had a very good meeting with President Erdoğan

US President Donald Trump answered questions from the press at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland after delivering a speech at the US Coast Guard Academy graduation ceremony in Connecticut. Starting with the message that the US would bring freedom to Cuba, Trump responded to a question about how much longer the embargo on Cuba would last by saying, "We will announce that soon."

When asked if there would be an escalation of tensions with Cuba, Trump said, "No, there will be no escalation. I don't think that's necessary. Look, the country is collapsing. It's in total chaos. They've lost control. They've really lost control over Cuba."

"Everything can develop very quickly"

Regarding his stance today after announcing yesterday that they had called off a strike on Iran with one hour to go, and whether they had received a response from Iran, Trump said, "Believe me, we are right on the edge. If we don't get the right answers, everything will develop very quickly. We are all ready. We need to get the right answers. These need to be completely, one hundred percent satisfactory answers. If we succeed, we will have saved a lot of time, energy, and most importantly, lives. Everything can develop very quickly. Or it could take a few days."

Stating that the people they are in contact with in Iran are much more reasonable than previous Iranian leaders, Trump said, "So I hope they make a deal that will be great for everyone. But I don't know. If I can prevent a war by waiting a few days, if I can prevent people from dying by waiting a few days, I think that's a wonderful thing."

"We have not offered Iran anything"

When asked if the US was considering offering to ease oil sanctions on Iran as part of peace talks, Trump replied, "There is no easing until they sign a deal. When they sign the deal, we can rebuild that place, and it would be a really good thing for both the country and the people. But no, we have not offered Iran anything."

"This situation will end soon, one way or another"

Stating that "the US did this because Iran was about to have a nuclear weapon and there was no other option but to attack Iran," Trump said, "But this situation will end one way or another soon. Oil prices will drop rapidly. There are 1,600 oil-laden ships in the Strait of Hormuz, and they will be leaving very soon. So we will see."

"No one has the kind of relationship I have with Erdoğan."

When asked about his meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Trump said, "Yes, I had a very good meeting with President Erdoğan. It was a fairly standard meeting. We have a very good relationship. Isn't it a good thing to have relationships with some quite tough leaders? He is a tough man. But no one has the kind of relationship I have with Erdoğan. He has done a good job. Some may approach this with skepticism, but I think he is a very good ally. His people respect him. His people show him great respect."
