Trump invokes 'war powers'

According to a statement from the White House, U.S. President Trump has resorted to an authority that has previously been used only three times during wartime.

The 1798 "Alien Enemies Act," which Trump has invoked, grants the president extraordinary powers to target and deport undocumented immigrants.

Trump's executive order, which targets the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, states that the organization in question is defined as a "foreign terrorist organization" and mandates the apprehension and immediate deportation of individuals alleged to be linked to this gang.

Meanwhile, some legal experts in the American public sphere suggest that using this law—which was invoked for the deportation of illegal immigrants—outside of wartime could lead to legal issues.
