Trump: Musk has lost his mind

ABC News reached U.S. President Donald Trump by phone on Thursday evening following his public spat with Elon Musk.

When asked if he was planning a meeting with Elon Musk, Trump replied, "Are you talking about the guy who has lost his mind?"

Trump said he is not "particularly" interested in speaking with Musk at this time.

Stating that Musk wants to meet with him, Trump indicated that he is not ready to talk. In an interview with CNN International, Trump said, "I don't even think about Elon. He has a problem, the poor guy has a problem."

A senior White House official stated that Trump is considering giving away or selling the red Tesla vehicle he purchased to support Elon Musk.

THE DISPUTE BETWEEN THE TWO

Trump and Musk engaged in a major public debate on social media, exchanging accusations against one another.

In the verbal sparring that stemmed from Musk's criticism of a tax cut bill signed by Trump, Musk claimed that Trump would lose the 2024 election without him, supported calls for Trump's impeachment, and alleged that Trump's name was in the Epstein files, which involve a sexual abuse and prostitution ring, arguing that the file in question was not released because it mentioned Trump's name.

Trump, in turn, said that Musk had "gone crazy" and threatened to terminate government contracts with his companies (SpaceX and Starlink) and cancel all subsidies.

Defending the tax cut bill, Trump stated, "I don't care that Elon turned against me, but he should have done it months ago. This is one of the biggest bills ever presented to Congress. It is a record $1.6 trillion spending cut and the largest tax cut ever given. If this bill is not passed, there will be a 68 percent tax increase and things much worse than that. I didn't create this mess. I'm just here to fix it."

Musk resigned from his position as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) last week.
