Trump's candidate for UN Secretary-General revealed
It has been claimed that US President Donald Trump plans to support FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the upcoming change of the United Nations Secretary-General.
According to reports in the American press, US President Donald Trump desires for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to replace current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whose term ends at the end of the year.
Allegedly, Trump believes that the 56-year-old Swiss national Infantino is a globally respected figure and possesses a special talent for bringing people together. Unnamed sources stated that Trump has commented that he does not see a figure as effective as Infantino among the prominent candidates for the current UN Secretary-General position.
Paolo Zampolli, one of Trump's special envoys, also said in a statement regarding the matter that Infantino could handle this challenging task with merit. Zampolli argued that there are similar dynamics between the UN Secretary-General position and the FIFA Presidency.
To be elected as Secretary-General at the UN, candidates must receive the support of at least nine members of the Security Council. Furthermore, it is required that the five permanent members do not exercise their veto power and that the candidate is finally approved by the General Assembly. Whether Infantino can be appointed will become clear in the coming months, depending on the preferences of UN members and the competition among the candidates.
