Trump sued by retail chain

Costco, one of the leading companies in the U.S. retail sector, has taken legal action against the new customs tariffs implemented by the Donald Trump administration.

In a petition filed with the U.S. Court of International Trade on November 28, the company stated that numerous tariffs enacted after Trump returned to office lack a legal basis and requested a refund of all taxes paid under this scope.

Costco's application noted that the customs duties in question were based by Trump on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). However, the lawsuit file argues that the IEEPA does not provide authority for such measures.

The petition also cited the similar case of V.O.S. Selections, Inc. v. Trump, in which the court ruled that the tariffs were not authorized by the IEEPA. Costco pointed out that this decision serves as a precedent.

The company stated that the outcomes of lawsuits filed by other firms did not secure its own right to a refund, which is why it was forced to initiate a new lawsuit.

MAJOR COMPANIES HAD FILED LAWSUITS PREVIOUSLY

Costco's move adds a new case to the lawsuits filed against the Trump administration's tariffs. Previously, major firms such as Revlon, Kawasaki Motors, Bumble Bee, and EssilorLuxottica had also taken the federal government to court on the same grounds.

FIRST STATEMENT FROM THE WHITE HOUSE

White House Spokesperson Kush Desai made the following statement to PEOPLE magazine:

“The economic consequences of not enforcing President Trump’s lawful tariffs are severe. This lawsuit makes that clear. We hope the matter will be resolved quickly and correctly by the Supreme Court.”

Shortly after returning to office, Trump began implementing comprehensive customs tariffs, imposing additional duties on products imported from almost all foreign countries. This made him the first U.S. President to use the IEEPA in this manner.

Despite rulings in lower courts limiting the tariffs, the taxes remain in effect as the legal process continues.

The applied taxes have caused costs to rise across a wide range of areas, from holiday products to groceries, and from wedding expenses to vehicle prices and alcoholic beverages. Thus, the tariffs have become one of the most controversial policies of Trump's second term.
