Trump’s 'Make Everything Great Again' Act passes the House of Representatives

The "Make Everything Great Again" (MEGA) Act, a comprehensive tax and spending cut package touted as U.S. President Donald Trump’s flagship domestic policy, has been voted on in the House of Representatives. The bill, which passed the Senate on Tuesday, cleared the House with a 218 to 214 vote. MEGA has now been sent to Trump’s desk to be signed into law.

The vote took place today after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delayed proceedings by speaking against the bill for nearly 9 hours. Jeffries broke the record for the longest speech in the history of the House of Representatives. While Democrats opposed the bill on the grounds that it would weaken the social safety net, Republicans defended MEGA, characterizing it as "economic restructuring."

A PACKAGE SHAPED BY TAX CUTS AND SPENDING REDUCTIONS

The multi-trillion-dollar bill includes both tax cuts and funding increases for national security. While budget increases are provided for areas such as the Pentagon and border security, the largest federal cuts to date are planned for social programs like Medicaid. Republicans aim to curb public spending and ensure fiscal discipline with these cuts.

The bill's passage through Congress marks President Donald Trump’s first major legislative success in his second term. In recent days, Trump, along with his allies in the House and Senate, exerted intense pressure within the party, forcing members who were inclined to break ranks to provide their support. Republican Party (GOP) leaders emphasized that this package is a critical step in the process of fulfilling Trump’s core campaign promises, ranging from immigration to taxes.

INTERNAL PARTY OPPOSITION OVERCOME

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune succeeded in bringing almost all members of the Republican Party into alignment. Despite warnings from fiscal hawks regarding the massive cost of the bill and objections from some moderate members over the Medicaid cuts, the GOP leadership remained determined to pass the package.

Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna described Trump’s last-minute direct intervention in the bill by saying, "There is only one person who can sign the deal." In her statement, Luna drew attention to the influence of Trump’s leadership over the Republican Party.
