Twitter shuts down hundreds of Hamas-linked accounts

In a statement, Linda Yaccarino, CEO of the social media platform X/Twitter, which has 541 million monthly active users, drew attention to the platform's global social responsibility regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Pointing out that the content shared on the platform is being reviewed, Yaccarino stated, “Since the start of the conflict, Twitter has identified and removed hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts from the platform.”

TERRORIST ATTACK MENTIONED

The statement referred to the conflicts in the region under the heading of 'terrorist attack against Israel'.

Emphasizing that there is no place on Twitter for terrorist organizations, violent, and extremist groups, Yaccarino stated that they ‘continue to remove such accounts in real-time.’ On the other hand, the CEO also conveyed that they have accelerated their efforts to review shared content more quickly.

24-HOUR DEADLINE HAD BEEN ISSUED

The European Union (EU) had recently reported that illegal content containing violence and disinformation was being spread on Twitter, that such content had not been removed despite warnings, and that a 24-hour deadline had been given to the company's owner, Elon Musk, to remove them.

Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for Internal Market, stated in his letter that following the attack on Israel by the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, there was content indicating that Twitter was being used to spread illegal content and misinformation in the EU.
