UK Labour Party suspends MP's membership

The main opposition Labour Party in the UK has suspended the party membership of MP Andy McDonald for three months due to his remarks at a pro-Palestinian solidarity march held in London on October 28, where he stated, "Until there is justice, until all people, Israeli and Palestinian, between the river (Jordan River) and the sea (Mediterranean Sea) can live in peaceful liberty, there will be no rest."

According to statements made by Labour Party officials to the British media, McDonald's use of the phrase "from the river to the sea," which is perceived as antisemitic in the UK and debated as implying the erasure of Israel from the map, caused concern within the Jewish community.

A party spokesperson, evaluating the remarks made by McDonald, stated, "The comments made over the weekend were deeply offensive, particularly at a time when antisemitism is rising and Jewish citizens are concerned about their safety."

The spokesperson also noted that McDonald's party membership has been suspended until the investigation launched into the matter is concluded.

In a statement on his X account regarding the temporary suspension of his party membership, McDonald indicated that the decision was made for a period of 3 months until the investigation is completed.

Stating that his words were misinterpreted, McDonald shared the view, "My words should not be interpreted as anything other than a heartfelt call for an end to the killings in Israel, Gaza, and the occupied West Bank, and for all peoples in the region to live in freedom and away from the threat of violence."

John McDonnell, the Shadow Chancellor and a prominent figure in the Labour Party, reacted to the temporary suspension of McDonald from the party, calling it "unjust and absurd."

A statement from the Labour Muslim Network (LMN), composed of Muslim members of the Labour Party, also read, "The right to live in freedom, peace, and self-determination is a right that must apply to all people. The only conclusion that can be drawn from this is that those who made the decision (to suspend McDonald) do not believe Muslims and Palestinians are worthy of this principle."

He had called for a ceasefire

In his speech at the solidarity march for Palestinians and Gaza held in London on Saturday, October 28, McDonald had stated that Israel was committing war crimes against Palestinians on an unprecedented scale.

Inviting politicians around the world to describe what is happening in Gaza as a crime against humanity and to call for an inclusive ceasefire, McDonald said, "Those in government want to say that everything started on October 7 and that everything happening is a response to the horrific crimes Hamas committed that day. But that is not the point. I want to read you the words of Abdalla Hasaneen, who lives in Rafah in southern Gaza: 'None of this has anything to do with Hamas. What is happening is purely ethnic cleansing against Palestinians.'"

In addition to the sentences that led to his investigation and the temporary suspension of his party membership, McDonald also included in his speech, "In all my time in Parliament, I have never been as horrified as I am today by the loss of a moral compass, the disregard for international law, and the abandonment of the Palestinians."

Unlike McDonald, the Labour Party leadership does not call for a ceasefire, instead emphasizing the demand for "humanitarian pauses" in the conflict, as voiced by the US and UK governments.

Yesterday in the country, Paul Bristow, a Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology and a Conservative Party MP, was also dismissed from his post for calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
