UK Prime Minister Starmer expresses support for Zelensky

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Following the call, Starmer expressed his support for Zelensky—whom US President Donald Trump labeled a dictator for suspending elections—by describing him as the "democratically elected leader of Ukraine".

Starmer stated that suspending elections during wartime is "entirely reasonable," much like what the UK did during the Second World War.

Starmer also reiterated his support for US-led efforts to secure a lasting peace in Ukraine that would deter Russia from any future aggression.

"YOU WON'T EVEN HAVE A COUNTRY LEFT"

Trump had targeted Zelensky in a statement on his social media account, saying, "Zelensky, a dictator who does not hold elections, will not even have a country left if he does not act quickly. I love Ukraine, but Zelensky has done a terrible job; his country is in ruins."
