UK Prime Minister Starmer holds phone call with Iranian President Pezeshkian

As tensions continue in the Middle East, Western leaders have increased diplomatic efforts to prevent Iran from launching an attack on Israel. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a phone call lasting approximately 30 minutes.

In a statement released by the UK Prime Minister's Office, it was reported that Starmer told Pezeshkian that he wanted Iran to refrain from attacking Israel and that war was in no one's interest. The statement noted that Starmer expressed deep concern over the situation in the Middle East and called on all parties to de-escalate to prevent further regional conflict.

The statement further indicated that during the call, Starmer emphasized his commitment to an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of all hostages, and an increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza, adding that Starmer stated the focus should be on diplomatic negotiations.

The statement also mentioned that the leaders agreed that a constructive dialogue between the two countries would be in the interest of both nations. It was reported that Starmer told Pezeshkian that dialogue between the two countries could only progress if Iran ceases its "destabilizing actions," including threats against individuals in the UK, and stops assisting Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
