UK signs new migration treaty

The parties, having re-evaluated the migration plan previously found unlawful by the UK court, announced that the treaty has been expanded and the concerns raised have been addressed.

With the new treaty, it is prevented that migrants sent to Rwanda are transferred to a third country where their lives or freedoms would be threatened.

With the signed treaty, the British government aims to send irregular migrants and those who enter the country illegally and apply for asylum to Rwanda.

For the treaty to enter into force, it must be approved by both the British and Rwandan parliaments.

ABOUT THE RWANDA PLAN

The "Rwanda Plan," first prepared in April 2022, had drawn reactions from the opposition, human rights organizations, and many international institutions, primarily the United Nations (UN).

The first flight carrying 7 people to Rwanda in June 2022 was halted by a decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Following this, the Home Office filed a new case in the High Court, and the court ruled on December 19, 2022, that the Rwanda flight was legal.

As a result of the appeal filed by human rights defenders who took the decision to the Court of Appeal, the court ruled on June 29 that the government's plan to send irregular migrants who enter the country illegally to Rwanda was not in accordance with the law.

The government in the UK aims to stop migration through deportation practices, especially after more than 44 thousand irregular migrants crossed the English Channel last year.
