Air defense cooperation between Ukraine and Saudi Arabia in the Gulf

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a significant defense cooperation agreement with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his visit to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. The agreement aims to establish a comprehensive air defense system against the recent rise in Iranian-origin drone and missile attacks in the region.

In a social media post following the meeting, Zelenskyy stated, “This agreement forms the basis for future contracts, technological cooperation, and investment. Saudi Arabia also possesses capabilities that are of interest to Ukraine. This cooperation can be mutually beneficial.”

Saudi Arabia's official news agency confirmed that the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding in the field of defense. The memorandum envisions the transfer of Ukraine's technological expertise, particularly in detecting and neutralizing drones, to the Gulf.

Ukraine has drawn attention with the defense methods it has developed against Iranian-made kamikaze drones in its war with Russia. Following the recent increase in Iran's attacks on Gulf countries, the Kyiv administration has moved to bring its military and technical capacity in the region to the Middle East.

In the last month alone, the Saudi Arabian administration announced that it has neutralized hundreds of Iranian drones and dozens of missiles since February 28. In an official announcement made on Friday, it was stated that at least six more missiles were successfully intercepted.

Since the autumn of 2024, Ukraine has become a major hub for the production of cheap and efficient interceptor unmanned aerial vehicles against increasing Russian UAV attacks. These experiences are expected to be integrated into defense lines in the Gulf.

CIVILIAN CASUALTIES CONTINUE

Officials from regional countries emphasize that the safety of the civilian population is under threat during attacks originating from Iran. According to the latest data, at least 25 people have lost their lives in the Gulf countries as a result of the attacks.

Following his visit to Saudi Arabia, Zelenskyy is expected to travel to the United Arab Emirates to deepen similar military and technological cooperation. This comprehensive collaboration is considered the beginning of a new era in the region's security balance.
