Ukraine's 40-day operation move: Will peace come or will the war intensify?

Recent developments in Ukraine indicate that steps are being taken that could change the course of the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following a detailed report by the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Major General Yevhen Khmara, approved a new 40-day operation plan against Russia. According to the plan, the goal is to force the Putin administration into peace.

In a statement on his official Telegram account, Zelenskyy stated that they aim to support the success achieved by SBU-affiliated units in defense with long-range and medium-range sanctions, and to deliver the final blow. The details of the operation in question were not shared with the public for security reasons. However, the statements indicate that Russian energy infrastructure points, in particular, will be targeted with missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks.

In a statement made on June 24, Zelenskyy emphasized that the support obtained from the G7 summit strengthened Ukraine's hand and would ensure that the conditions to lead Russia toward peace are created more quickly.

ATTACKS ON CRITICAL ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE

In recent weeks, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have increased their attacks, particularly targeting energy infrastructure in Crimea. As a result of the attacks, fuel supply on the peninsula was completely cut off, ferry services were suspended, and a ban was imposed on the passage of heavy vehicles across the Crimean Bridge. While power outages were implemented in regions such as Alushta, Armyansk, Krasnoperekopsk, and Dzhankoy, electricity could not be provided for the entire day in Sevastopol on June 24.

The Ukrainian Special Operations Forces also announced that the railway bridge of the North Crimean Canal near the village of Razdolne, which has high strategic importance, was destroyed. This attack was evaluated as a serious blow to the supply lines of Russian forces in the southern direction.

GROWING CONCERN IN CRIMEA

Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov had previously stated in his remarks that Crimea could be effectively isolated from Russia through UAV attacks. Robert Brovdi, Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, pointed out that a period of transport isolation, the undermining of the tourism season, and resource shortages is imminent in Crimea.

Refat Chubarov, Chairman of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, called on Russian citizens living in the region to leave the peninsula while the Kerch Bridge is still standing.

If the new operation plan succeeds, it is expected that the four-year war will evolve into peace negotiations in a short time. While the Ukrainian side continues its preparations, all eyes have turned to the response from the Moscow administration and the international community.
