Ukraine: We thwarted a Russian intelligence plot to assassinate Zelenskyy

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced in a written statement that it has thwarted a plot by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the country's top military and political officials.

The statement noted that SBU investigators had disrupted Russia's assassination plot against Zelenskyy and other senior officials, and that two colonels from the State Protection Service of Ukraine had been apprehended in connection with the case.

The statement indicated that the colonels had been leaking classified information to Russia, allowing Russian intelligence to "actively develop plans to eliminate Zelenskyy," and included the following remarks:

"One of the tasks of the FSB's intelligence network was to find perpetrators among the military personnel close to the President's security detail who could take Zelenskyy hostage and subsequently kill him. The enemy also planned to eliminate SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk, Head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov, and other high-ranking officials."

SBU Chief Malyuk also emphasized in his statement that only a limited number of people were aware of the special operation they conducted and that he personally managed the process, stating: "The terrorist attack, which was expected to be a gift to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin for his inauguration, was actually a failure for the Russian Federal Security Service. However, we must not forget that the enemy is strong and experienced and should not be underestimated. We will continue to work actively to ensure that every traitor receives the punishment they deserve."
