UN: $14.5 million needed to help flood victims in Afghanistan
The United Nations (UN) World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that recent floods in Afghanistan have negatively affected 80,000 people and that $14.5 million is required to provide aid to these individuals.
The WFP report shared the scale of the damage caused by the floods in Afghanistan.
The report noted that flash floods occurring in March, April, and May severely impacted infrastructure, particularly in the northeastern and western regions, and that aid teams have been unable to reach some areas.
It was stated that 9,000 homes were damaged and the number of dead and injured exceeded 540 due to the floods between May 10-17 in the provinces of Baghlan, Takhar, Badakhshan, Ghor, Herat, and Balkh.
It was reported that 80,000 people across the country have been negatively affected by the floods, that these individuals are in need of urgent assistance, and that $14.5 million is urgently required for this purpose. It was conveyed that the emergency food, shelter, and clean water needs of the flood victims are being prioritized.
The floods that occurred in the second week of May most heavily affected Baghlan province.
