UN: Civilian death toll in Russia-Ukraine War reaches 10,703

The latest situation in Ukraine was discussed at the UN Security Council (UNSC).

Speaking at the session, UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, Mohamed Khaled Khiari, expressed concern that the conflict is spreading to residential areas in eastern Ukraine.

Khiari noted that Russian forces have almost completely destroyed the villages, towns, and cities in Ukraine where the war has spread.

Stating that these attacks violate international law and must be ended immediately, Khiari said, "Russia's invasion of Ukraine has resulted in the deaths of 10,703 civilians. Of these, 549 were children. 20,146 people have been injured. We condemn all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure."

"ALL PARTIES MUST PROTECT CIVILIANS"

Lisa Doughten, Director of the Humanitarian Financing and Resource Mobilization Division at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), also stated that attacks against civilians violate international humanitarian law and that all parties must protect civilians.

Doughten expressed that they still face significant obstacles in delivering humanitarian aid.

Reporting that humanitarian access is particularly restricted in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions annexed by Russia, Doughten stated that they have been unable to deliver life-saving humanitarian aid to approximately 1.5 million people.
