UN fails to reach agreement on Gaza despite 6th meeting

The UNSC met in a closed session at the UN headquarters in New York.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Robert Wood, Deputy Permanent Representative of the US to the UN, shared the information that "Currently, no agreement has been reached."

DIFFERING VIEWS EXIST

Wood stated that the issue of a humanitarian pause in the conflict was brought up at the meeting, but that there are still differing views on this matter within the Council.

Zhang Jun, China's Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that they had convened the UNSC together with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to discuss "Israel's attacks on hospitals, refugee camps, and UN facilities."

HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

Describing the loss of more than 10 thousand Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as a "humanitarian crisis," Zhang expressed that no one is safe in Gaza.

Zhang emphasized that in the face of this dire situation, the UNSC must urgently adopt a resolution to ensure a humanitarian ceasefire.

Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that all Council members are aware of the severity of the humanitarian situation on the ground, noting, "They are aware that the situation will worsen if the fighting does not stop."

Pointing out that a general consensus has formed regarding the improvement of the humanitarian situation and stopping the loss of life, Nusseibeh said, "Our priority is to save lives."
