UN General Assembly adopts 'ceasefire in Gaza' resolution

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly has adopted a resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza with 153 votes in favor against 10 "no" votes.

The resolution, introduced by Egypt and co-sponsored by nearly 100 countries including Turkey, was voted on during the 193-member UN General Assembly's Special Emergency Session on Palestine.

RESOLUTION ADOPTED

The resolution was adopted with 153 votes in favor, 23 abstentions, and 10 "no" votes. The countries that voted "no" were Austria, Czechia, Guatemala, Israel, Liberia, Micronesia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, and the US. The resolution refers to the UN Charter and all resolutions adopted by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council regarding Palestine.

The resolution, which cites the letter sent to the Council by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres invoking Article 99 of the UN Charter, as well as the letter sent to the General Assembly by Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), highlights the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the suffering of the Palestinian people, stating that all civilian populations must be protected.

HUMANITARIAN AID

The resolution, which calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, urges all parties to fulfill their obligations under international law, particularly regarding the protection of civilians. The resolution demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and the provision of access to humanitarian aid.

On October 27, a resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza was adopted by the UN General Assembly with 121 votes. It is noteworthy that the number of countries voting in favor of the current resolution has risen to 153.
