'Palestine' resolution voted on at the UNGA

The Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN submitted its first draft resolution to the General Assembly following the additional rights it gained through a vote in the UN General Assembly in May. The resolution was voted on during an emergency special session titled "Illegal Israeli actions in occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory."

The draft resolution, which demands that Israel end its presence in the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months and was co-sponsored by more than 40 countries, was adopted with 124 votes in favor and 14 against.

In the vote, 43 countries abstained. The US, Israel, Czechia, Argentina, Hungary, Fiji, Malawi, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Tonga, and Tuvalu voted against the resolution.

The adopted resolution states, "We demand that Israel bring to an end without delay its unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territory, and do so no later than 12 months from the adoption of this resolution."

In addition to the demand for Israel to end the occupation in accordance with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) rulings, the resolution calls for the cessation of all new settlement activities and the withdrawal from all settlements, and also states that Israel must make reparations for the damage caused in the occupied Palestinian territories.

In this context, the resolution calls on "all member states to comply with their obligations under international law." Furthermore, it requests support for Palestine's right to self-determination, non-recognition of the illegal situation created by Israel, non-assistance to Israel, and the implementation of necessary sanctions.
