UN: Iran and Pakistan must resort to peaceful means

UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric made statements to journalists at the daily press briefing.

Stating that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is deeply concerned about the rising tension between Iran and Pakistan, Dujarric noted that there have been casualties on both sides.

Dujarric expressed that the rising tension in the region is generally worrying and that Guterres is ready to provide support if requested.

CALL FOR DIALOGUE AND COOPERATION

"We call for maximum restraint," Dujarric said, adding that Iran and Pakistan must resolve all their issues "through peaceful means, dialogue, and cooperation."

Dujarric noted that the solution should be pursued within the framework of the principles of sovereignty and good neighborliness.

IRAN AND PAKISTAN TENSION

Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency announced on January 16 that the camps of the Jaish al-Adl organization in Pakistan had been targeted with missiles and drones.

The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Iran had carried out an airstrike on the Panjgur region of the border province of Balochistan on January 16, resulting in the deaths of 2 children and the injury of 3 girls.

The Islamabad administration decided to recall its ambassador to Tehran on January 17 and informed Tehran that the Iranian Ambassador to Islamabad, who was in his home country for a visit, might not return for some time. Pakistan had carried out a missile attack on a village in Iran's border region during the night. The Tehran administration stated that 9 people, including 3 women and 4 children, were killed in Pakistan's missile attack.

The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the other hand, announced that a series of highly coordinated and specifically targeted precision military strikes were carried out against "terrorist hideouts" in Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan province, and that a large number of "terrorists" were killed during the intelligence-based operation.
