UN Secretary-General Guterres: 'The Syrian people are facing a historic opportunity for a peaceful future'

Emphasizing that the Syrians must determine the future of Syria, Guterres highlighted that UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen will also continue to provide support in this direction.

DESCRIBED IT AS A 'HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY'

Guterres assessed that "following 14 years of brutal war and the end of the dictatorial regime, the Syrian people are facing a historic opportunity to build a stable and peaceful future." Pointing out that there is "much work to be done" to ensure an orderly political transition, Guterres stated, "At this sensitive time, I reiterate my call for calm, restraint from violence, and the protection of the rights of all Syrians without discrimination."

Guterres underscored that consular and diplomatic facilities, as well as the personnel serving there, must be protected in accordance with international law.

"INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SUPPORT IS NEEDED"

Noting that the support of the international community is needed for the political transition process to be inclusive, comprehensive, and to meet the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people in all their diversity, the UN Secretary-General stated that the sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity of Syria must be restored.

Guterres emphasized that the UN will continue to honor those who have borne the burden of this conflict, and expressed that they will support the Syrians in building a country where reconciliation, justice, freedom, and prosperity reach everyone.

The UN Secretary-General underlined that this is the path to sustainable peace in Syria.
