UNICEF: 333 million children worldwide in the grip of extreme poverty

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has reported that 333 million children, representing approximately one-sixth of the world's child population, are living in extreme poverty.

UNICEF and the World Bank have released a joint report titled "Global Trends in Child Monetary Poverty According to International Poverty Lines." The report notes that the number of children living below the $2.15-a-day threshold, which is defined as living in "extreme poverty," decreased by 13 percent from 2013 to 2022, falling from 383 million to 333 million. It further states that at this current rate, the goal of ending child poverty by 2030 will not be met.

The report highlights that Sub-Saharan Africa bears the greatest burden of child poverty, noting that 40 percent of the world's children living in "extreme poverty" are located in this region.

The report also points out that the child poverty rate in this region rose from 54.8 percent in 2013 to 71.1 percent in 2022.
