Unrest on university campuses in Iran: Students launch wave of protests

With the opening of the academic year in Iran, protests organized by students at various universities have begun to come to the fore. According to information shared on social media and by local sources, various tensions were observed on some campuses between student groups and communities supporting the government.

The protests coincided with the 40th-day memorial ceremonies held in memory of those who lost their lives in anti-government actions last month. These demonstrations are considered one of the largest instances of social unrest seen in the country since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

In some of the shared videos, it is clearly seen that students gathered at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran are chanting slogans against Iran's leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It was also alleged that cheers were made in favor of Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of the deposed Shah of the era.

News agencies linked to official authorities, on the other hand, published video recordings claiming that stones were thrown among students and that volunteer Basij students were injured in the incidents. It is known that Basij groups have played an active role in suppressing protests alongside security forces in the past.

In content published by human rights organizations, it was reported that protest actions were also held at Beheshti and Amirkabir universities in Tehran, as well as at Mashhad University. On the other hand, it was noted that demonstrations held with anti-government slogans following the detention of a teacher in the city of Abdanan in western Iran have been on the agenda of women's rights organizations and social media users.

This social unrest in the country is expected to continue in the coming days.
