US bill for universities in the spotlight over Palestine protests

The bill titled the "Antisemitism Awareness Act," which was passed in the US House of Representatives with 320 votes in favor and 91 against, emphasizes issues categorized as antisemitism across the country.

House Speaker Republican Mike Johnson, who played a major role in the bill's passage, argued in a statement that the ongoing pro-Palestine demonstrations on campuses serve a wave of "antisemitism" and increase anti-Jewish sentiment.

The bill in question requires the Department of Education to use the definition of antisemitism adopted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and to define incidents at universities accordingly.

Critics of the bill, including Matt Gaetz and several other representatives, argue that the definition of antisemitism in question is too broad and could easily narrow the scope of freedom of speech.

It is stated that the bill, which has been sent to the Senate and will go to US President Joe Biden's desk if it passes there, will further fuel debates regarding the freedom of speech and the right to protest in the country.

House Speaker Johnson visited Columbia University last week, arguing that the events on campus were "antisemitic" and that university administrations "must do what is necessary to remove the tent encampments."
