US files lawsuit against supermarket chain merger

In a statement released by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), it was announced that the commission has filed a lawsuit against the largest supermarket merger in US history.

The statement noted that the agreement for Kroger to acquire Albertsons for $24.6 billion is anti-competitive, stating that the deal would eliminate competition between Kroger and Albertsons, which would lead to higher prices for food and other essential household goods for millions of Americans.

The statement further indicated that the loss of competition would also result in a decline in the quality of products and services, and would narrow the options available to consumers for where they can shop for groceries.

Pointing out that the deal would also harm supermarket employees, the statement noted that it would threaten the ability of workers to secure higher wages, better benefits, and improved working conditions.

The statement noted that if the merger is completed, Kroger and Albertsons would operate more than 5,000 stores and approximately 4,000 retail pharmacies, employing nearly 700,000 people across 48 states.

Kroger and Albertsons announced they had reached a merger agreement in October 2022. Under the terms of the merger agreement, it was reported that Kroger would acquire all outstanding shares of Albertsons.
