US issues warning for citizens to leave Mali

The US Embassy in Bamako has highlighted the country's growing security issues and fuel crisis, advising its citizens to leave Mali via commercial flights. The embassy also recommended that US citizens who choose to remain in the country prepare for emergencies and identify a secure shelter.

Previously, an order was issued for non-essential diplomatic personnel and their families to leave the country due to similar concerns. It is reported that terrorist groups linked to Al-Qaeda in Mali have been carrying out attacks on tankers transporting fuel from neighboring countries since September. Experts state that these attacks are being carried out in response to the Malian government's bans on fuel sales in rural areas.

The government had banned fuel sales in rural areas, which were typically conducted using jerrycans, in an effort to prevent terrorist groups from accessing fuel. While life in the capital, Bamako, has come to a near standstill due to fuel shortages, schools across the country have suspended education for two weeks.
