US police fire 96 rounds at Black man Dexter Reed
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) in Chicago has released body camera footage from police regarding a fatal shooting that occurred on March 21 in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
In the footage, four police officers surround a white SUV and shout at 26-year-old Reed to "open the door," followed by dozens of gunshots being exchanged.
Although COPA's preliminary report stated that Reed fired his weapon first and the police responded, it was observed that this was not clear in the publicly released footage.
It was noted that Reed, who was taken to the hospital, lost his life, while one police officer sustained a wrist injury during the incident.
96 ROUNDS FIRED IN 41 SECONDS
COPA, the agency authorized to investigate police shootings, has requested that the police officers who fired 96 rounds at the young Black suspect in 41 seconds be relieved of duty until the investigation is completed.
US Senator Dick Durbin stated in a post on the social media platform X that the violence shown in the video of Dexter Reed being shot was "shocking."

Durbin said, "Our law enforcement officers serve our community with honor and courage and face many risks. However, those who fail to follow the high standards they swore to uphold must be held accountable.
I hope that a thorough investigation will be conducted fairly and in a timely manner."
