US President Joe Biden makes 'ceasefire' statement

US President Joe Biden made statements to the press following Secretary of State Antony Blinken's trip to Israel to discuss the status of the ceasefire process in Gaza.

Stating that discussions regarding the situation in Gaza are ongoing, Biden said, "We are not giving up. (A ceasefire in Gaza) is still possible."

Negotiations were held in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on August 15-16 to reach a prisoner exchange and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas.

The delegations led by Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, US Central Intelligence Agency Director Bill Burns, Egyptian Intelligence Chief Abbas Kamel, and Israeli Foreign Intelligence Service Mossad Director David Barnea participated in the talks in Doha, which were described as having "gone well."

It was reported that the parties would continue ceasefire negotiations next week in Cairo, the capital of Egypt.

On August 16, before an event held at the White House, Biden had stated regarding a potential ceasefire agreement in Gaza, "We are closer than we have ever been."
