US President Trump: Iran was going to attack Turkey

Making statements that left their mark on the agenda during the G-7 Summit, US President Donald Trump made notable assessments regarding Iran's past policies and its relations with Turkey. Speaking at a joint press conference with the Qatari delegation, Trump claimed that Iran once attacked Turkey and stated that he had difficulty understanding this situation.

Trump used the following expressions: "Iran once even attacked Turkey. I never understood that. Nobody will ever understand that."

Arguing that the former Iranian administration acted irrationally in the decisions it made, Trump said, "That's the problem. They were totally irrational people, and those people are gone. I think Iran has a rational leadership team right now," expressing that better communication has been established with the current government. He also added that dialogue has strengthened following the political change in Iran and that a more constructive process is progressing between the two countries.

In the assessment regarding the period when activity increased in the Gulf region at the beginning of the conflict, missiles shot down in Turkish airspace by Patriot air defense systems were brought to the agenda. The Iranian-made missiles, which were detected around Hatay and Adana in Turkey and were alleged to have targeted the Incirlik Air Base, had been neutralized in cooperation with NATO countries during the crisis. Responsibility for these attacks was not claimed by Iran, and official authorities had stated that Iran was not conducting an operation against Turkey. However, experts agree that the origin of the missiles is Iran.

It was noted that such attempts ended as diplomatic traffic increased in the subsequent process. In Trump's latest statements, his emphasis on the distinction between the old and new Iranian administrations drew attention. The US President underlined that a more positive relationship has been established with the new leaders, saying, "There is a very different Iran now."
