US seizes Venezuelan President Maduro's plane
US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that the Dassault Falcon 900EX aircraft used by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro for international visits has been seized on the grounds that it was 'purchased illegally.'
Tensions between the US and Venezuela have reached a new level following the re-election of President Nicolas Maduro.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced in a statement that the Dassault Falcon 900EX aircraft used by Maduro for international visits was seized in the Dominican Republic.
Garland stated that the plane was purchased illegally for $13 million through a shell company and was smuggled out of the US 'for the use of Nicolas Maduro and his cronies.' US officials reported that the operation was carried out in close cooperation with the Dominican Republic.
US Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Enforcement Matthew Axelrod said, 'Let this seizure send a clear message. Aircraft illegally acquired from the US for the benefit of sanctioned Venezuelan officials cannot just fly off into the sunset.' he said.
US National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett also stated, 'This is an important step to ensure that Maduro continues to feel the consequences of his mismanagement of Venezuela.'
