US ships tanks and armored vehicles to Poland
As part of a plan to strengthen NATO's eastern borders, the US has delivered its first shipment of tanks and armored vehicles to a storage facility in the strategically located town of Powidz, Poland.
According to a report by the "Stars and Stripes" newspaper, a written statement from the US Army confirmed that 14 M1 Abrams tanks and one M88 armored vehicle were transported by rail to the base in Powidz yesterday.
The statement noted that the facility in Powidz, which will be managed by the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, "will be one of the most significant facilities NATO has established in over 30 years."
The facility, which is located approximately 400 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and will be fully operational next year, is set to store a total of 85 tanks, 190 armored vehicles, 35 artillery pieces, and various munitions.
Brigade Commander Colonel Ernest Lane II stated that the facility would strengthen NATO's operational capability, adding, "Its strategic location provides us with multiple options for transportation as well as different choices regarding deployment."
