US suspends Green Card lottery indefinitely

Recent events in the US have impacted the future of the Green Card program. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced that the Green Card lottery would be suspended indefinitely following the armed attack at Brown University. It was revealed that the perpetrator of the attack, Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, had entered the US in 2017 under the diversity immigrant visa program (DV1) and was a green card holder.

Noem stated that this decision was made under the instruction of President Trump. Trump had previously made efforts to terminate the DV1 program following an attack in New York carried out by an ISIS terrorist who had entered the country under the same program. Noem said, "I am instructing USCIS to immediately suspend the DV1 program so that no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous program."

Five days ago, four people lost their lives in an armed attack at Brown University. Among the deceased was a nuclear physicist. Neves Valente, identified as the perpetrator of the attack, was accused of killing the nuclear physicist, who was a former university classmate. Valente was already wanted for killing five people in two separate attacks and was found dead in a warehouse, having committed suicide.

These events have caused the US to reconsider its immigration policies, and the future of the Green Card program has been cast into uncertainty.
