US to veto Palestine

The US will veto Palestine's request for full membership in the United Nations (UN).

US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel announced in a statement that the US will use its veto power in the UN Security Council vote regarding Palestine's request for full membership in the UN.

Patel stated that the US believes such a move would not grant Palestine statehood, even if done with good intentions, and noted that there is no consensus on whether Palestine meets the membership criteria as a state.

FULL MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION TO BE VOTED ON

Patel explained that the US believes the fastest path to recognition of Palestine as a state is through direct negotiations between the Israeli and Palestinian administrations, with the support of other partners who share this goal.

The UN Security Council will vote on Palestine's application for full UN membership at 23:00 TRT. Palestine currently holds the status of a non-member observer state at the UN. For Palestine to become a full member of the UN, the application must be approved by the Security Council and subsequently by at least two-thirds of the General Assembly.
