'I carried weapons' controversy between US vice presidential candidates

Ahead of the upcoming presidential elections in the US, a "weapons" controversy between the two vice presidential candidates continues to occupy the public agenda.

Walz's remarks in a speech the other day regarding carrying weapons in a war zone, where he said, "We need to make sure that these weapons of war, that I carried in war, are only where they belong," sparked debate.

These words from Walz, who served for 25 years in various ranks as a member of the US National Guard, drew a reaction from his Republican rival JD Vance.

Vance, who is also a former soldier, stated in his remarks on the subject, "Walz says, 'We shouldn't allow weapons that I used in war to be used on American streets.' I wonder, when did Tim Walz serve in a war? When did he go? What weapon did he use in that war? He hasn't spent a single day in a combat zone."

CNN reporter Tom Foreman conducted a fact-check on whether Walz had actually been in a war and carried weapons following the statements from both figures, and shared the results on air.

The CNN report noted that there is no evidence to show that Walz was actively present in a war zone or carried weapons while serving in the military.

The same report stated that while Walz's words were understood by the public as him having used weapons in an active conflict, the Democratic candidate actually only meant to say that he had served in such a region.

On the other hand, while Republican circles are heavily utilizing the CNN report, they argue that the Democratic vice presidential candidate lied to the public about his past and misled society regarding his use of weapons.
