US: We understand Turkey's legitimate concerns regarding the PKK terror threat

Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller answered journalists' questions regarding developments in Syria during his daily press briefing.

Regarding the threat posed by the PKK/PYD terrorist organization in northern Syria, Miller stated, "With the increase in conflicts in northern Syria at this point, we understand Turkey's legitimate concerns regarding the terror threat posed by the PKK."

Noting that they also understand Turkey's "very legitimate concerns" regarding the presence of foreign fighters within Syria, Miller emphasized that the US is therefore speaking with the Turkish government about these concerns and is "trying to find a way forward."

Miller said, "I can say that what we want to see is the establishment of a Syrian national government that includes all ethnic groups within Syria."

Pointing out that at the end of the process, there should be no "sub-national militia groups" carrying weapons under separate flags, Miller expressed that in this regard, it is "certainly appropriate" to discuss the expulsion of foreign fighters from Syria.

When asked what the newly established political system in Syria should be, Miller replied, "This is a decision for the Syrian people, not the US."

Miller noted that the Syrian people, while forming their government and constitution, should make decisions within a framework that represents their aspirations and the normal compromises that occur in civil society.

Stating that the US stands at the point of reminding of the main principles during this process, Miller emphasized the importance of adopting a "transparent and inclusive constitution" in Syria.
