Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil and police officer Jason Trumbower shared details regarding the attack during a press conference they held.

McNeil stated that the 20-year-old son of a deputy sheriff, Phoenix Ikner, had been taken into custody, and said that the suspect carried out the attack using a weapon belonging to his mother.

Trumbower reported that the number of people who lost their lives in the attack had risen to 2 and that these individuals were not students.

Authorities noted that the treatment of the 6 injured people continues in the hospital.

MANY GUNSHOTS HEARD

Eyewitnesses reported hearing 15 to 20 gunshots. One eyewitness stated that a young man exited the university's Student Union building with a gun and that those around him fled in a panic, adding that many students took refuge in a nearby church.

In his first statement following the attack, US President Donald Trump said, "It is a shameful, terrible situation that such events occur. We will have more to say on this later."

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, in a statement on his social media account, said, "Our prayers are with Florida State University. State law enforcement is actively responding."
