Breaking News: Magnitude 8.8 earthquake strikes eastern Russia! Tsunami waves reach Kamçatka
An earthquake of magnitude 8.8 has struck off the Kamçatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. Following the quake, tsunami warnings were issued for Russia's and Japan's Pacific coasts as well as the Pacific Islands.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced that an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 struck off Russia's Kamçatka Peninsula. The tremor, which occurred at 02:25 Turkish time, was reported to have been recorded at a depth of 19 kilometres.
Following the earthquake, tsunami warnings were issued for Russia's and Japan's Pacific coasts as well as the Pacific Islands, with wave heights expected to reach up to 4 metres.
Panic-stricken moments during the earthquake were captured on amateur cameras, while the Russian press reported that damage assessment work is ongoing.
Tsunami waves have reached Kamçatka Island. Evacuation orders were issued for coastal areas in Japan.
IT HAD BEEN STRUCK BY A MAGNITUDE 7.6 EARTHQUAKE
Russia's Kamçatka Peninsula was struck by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake on 20 July.
The earthquake was reported to have occurred in the open waters of the Pacific Ocean, 115 kilometres from the peninsula's city of Petropavlosvk-Kamçatski.
