Vehicle loaded with gasoline canisters plows into crowd in New York

In Rochester, New York, a vehicle containing numerous gasoline canisters plowed into a crowd leaving a concert on New Year's Eve. Two people lost their lives and 5 people were injured in the attack.

Rochester Police Chief David Smith stated in a press conference that an SUV-type vehicle struck another vehicle exiting a parking lot on New Year's Eve, noting that the vehicles then plowed into the crowd leaving the concert at the Kodak Center. Smith stated that the fire that broke out following the crash was extinguished by the fire department in about an hour, and that after the fire was put out, at least a dozen gasoline canisters were found inside and around the SUV. Smith announced that after the gasoline canisters were discovered, the bomb squad intervened in the vehicle.

The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force has launched a terror investigation into the incident. Reports in the US press stated that the vehicle loaded with gasoline canisters was driven by a suspect named Michael Avery, who survived the crash with serious injuries. The reports also stated that a suicide note and a journal were left in the hotel room where the suspect was staying, and that his family has been taken in for questioning.

Authorities reported that the family stated Michael Avery suffered from bipolar disorder, although it had not been clinically diagnosed.
