Visa liberalization coming between EU and Armenia

In a statement from the EU Council, it was announced that in addition to the decision to start visa liberalization talks, it was decided to transfer 10 million euros to the Armenian army. 

According to a report by DW Türkçe; this marks the first financial support transferred from Brussels to the Armenian army to date. In a written statement from the EU, it was stated that the resources to be provided from the European Peace Facility aim to improve the logistical capabilities of the Armenian army and contribute to the protection of civilians in emergency situations.

'A TURNING POINT'

Expressing his satisfaction with the military aid, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said regarding the visa talks, "This is a very important turning point in deepening EU-Armenia relations based on shared values, principles, and a vision of prosperity."

If a visa liberalization agreement is reached, Armenian citizens will be able to travel freely to the 29 Schengen member countries without a visa.

Currently, citizens of former Soviet countries Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia possess this right. While there are a series of criteria that Yerevan must meet for visa-free travel, Armenian media reported that the negotiation process could take years.

TURKEY BEGAN 11 YEARS AGO

Similar visa liberalization negotiations between the EU and Turkey began in 2013. Ankara has already met 66 of the 72 criteria demanded by Brussels. However, the process stalled when no progress could be made on regulations regarding terrorism and personal data.
