Vladimir Putin to grant citizenship

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced in a decree that he will grant citizenship to foreign nationals fighting in Ukraine. 

According to the decree, individuals who sign a contract will be able to apply for Russian passports for themselves, their spouses, children, and parents. These individuals are required to sign a contract with the military for at least one year.

This includes those who have signed contracts with regular armed forces or other "military formations." Moscow does not publish data regarding the number of foreigners fighting on its side in Ukraine. 

However, it is known that there are those who have joined the Russian army in exchange for bonuses exceeding 100 times their monthly salary in Cuba. 

First time since World War II

In September 2022, Russia conscripted 300,000 more people for the first time since World War II. Stating that hundreds of thousands of men signed voluntary contracts to become professional soldiers last year, the Kremlin argues that there is no need for further mobilization. 

Moscow and Kyiv have not disclosed the scale of their losses in the 22-month-long war. According to a US intelligence report, the war in Ukraine has cost Russia 315,000 dead and wounded soldiers. 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced last month that the military had proposed mobilizing an additional 450,000-500,000 people.
