Voter turnout in Iran hits historic low

Unofficial results have been announced for the Islamic Consultative Assembly and the Assembly of Experts elections held yesterday in Iran, the latter of which is tasked with electing and supervising the supreme leader.

TURNOUT RATE AT 41 PERCENT

According to Iranian media, a total of 25 million voters went to the polls in a country with approximately 61 million registered voters. Following the conclusion of voting at 00:00 local time, the initial unofficial results indicate that the voter turnout remained at 41 percent.

While it was stated that approximately 25 percent of voters cast their ballots in the capital, Tehran, turnout rates in major provinces were reported as 49.7 percent in Qom, 55 percent in Ilam, 43 percent in Sistan and Baluchestan, 40 percent in Razavi Khorasan, and 47 percent in Lorestan.

VOTING LASTED 16 HOURS

Meanwhile, the voting process in Iran, which began yesterday at 08:00 local time and was initially scheduled to end at 18:00, was extended first to 20:00, then to 22:00, and finally until 00:00.

More than 15,000 candidates are competing for the 290 seats in Iran's Islamic Consultative Assembly, while 144 candidates are vying for the 88 seats in the Assembly of Experts, which has the authority to elect, supervise, and dismiss the supreme leader.
