Washington Post remains 'neutral' in elections: Statement from Jeff Bezos

The tradition in the US of prestigious newspapers announcing which candidate they support before an election has been broken thanks to the Washington Post. The Washington Post, owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos, whose company has multi-million dollar contracts with the government, has not announced a candidate it supports for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Following this, members of the newspaper's editorial board, David Hoffman and Molly Roberts, resigned.

After the newspaper decided to stop endorsing Harris, it lost more than 200 thousand subscribers. This number corresponds to 8 percent of the newspaper's total subscribers.

Following the reactions to the decision taken by the newspaper, a statement came from Jeff Bezos. Bezos argued that "a newspaper's endorsement of a presidential candidate has no critical impact on elections."

Stating that no undecided voter would make their choice based on a newspaper, Bezos used the expression, "Endorsing a candidate only creates a perception of not being independent. Ending this is the right thing to do."
