In Iran, a woman named Roya Heshmati shared a photo on social media last May taken while she was walking on the streets of the capital, Tehran, with her head and arms uncovered and wearing a skirt below the knee.
9 YEARS IN PRISON SOUGHT
A lawsuit was filed against Heshmati on charges of "violating public morality" and "receiving money from groups abroad." She was sentenced to a total of 9 years in prison, a fine of 11 million 250 thousand tomans (approximately 8 thousand TL), and 148 lashes.
74 LASHES
Upon her lawyer's appeal, the sentence was reduced to a fine of 1 million 250 thousand tomans and 74 lashes. The young woman's sentence was carried out last Wednesday.
