White House official: No meeting planned between Trump and Putin in the near future

The meeting expected to take place between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, will not be held anytime soon.

Reports in the U.S. press, citing an unnamed source, stated that the phone call held yesterday between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio showed that Russia is reluctant to commit to Trump's peace strategy.

The unnamed White House official said, "Secretary of State Rubio and Foreign Minister Lavrov had a productive phone call. Therefore, an additional in-person meeting between the ministers is not necessary, and President Trump is not scheduled to meet with President Putin in the near future."

"WE CANNOT POSTPONE SOMETHING THAT HAS NOT YET BEEN FINALIZED"

Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed the possibility of postponing the meeting expected to take place between Trump and Putin in Budapest, Hungary, stating, "We cannot postpone something that has not yet been finalized. Neither President Trump nor President Putin gave a definitive date. We need serious preparation. This may take time. That is why no definitive date was set in the beginning."

Peskov had described reports that Putin and Trump could travel to Budapest on the same plane as a "fantastic scenario."

On the other hand, Trump and Putin met on August 15 at an air base in Anchorage, Alaska, in the U.S., to end the war in Ukraine. Some U.S. and Russian sources had indicated that there were significant disagreements between the two sides during the meeting.
