WHO announces: The grim toll in Iran following US and Israeli attacks has been revealed

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared updated data regarding the humanitarian situation in the region following the attacks on Iran. In a statement on his social media account, Ghebreyesus announced that the total number of deaths and injuries in Iran, Israel, and Lebanon has been rising rapidly since the war in the Middle East began.

According to WHO data, one of the most severe consequences of the conflicts is being seen in Iran.

CASUALTIES IN IRAN EXCEED 1,300

Stating that the conflicts in the Middle East have escalated rapidly in recent times, Ghebreyesus expressed that health systems are under severe pressure. Sharing WHO data regarding casualties in the countries, Ghebreyesus provided the following information:

"Reports indicate more than 1,300 deaths and 900 injuries in Iran, at least 570 deaths and 1,400 injuries in Lebanon, and 15 deaths and 2,142 injuries in Israel"

HEALTH CENTERS ALSO TARGETED

According to the WHO, there has also been an increase in attacks on health facilities in the region. Ghebreyesus reported that since February 28, 18 attacks have been identified in Iran, 25 in Lebanon, and 2 in Israel.

Emphasizing that attacks on health centers have serious consequences, Ghebreyesus stated the following:

"These attacks not only cause deaths but also deprive communities of the intensive care they need most"

DISPLACED PERSONS AND HEALTH RISKS

According to WHO data, it is estimated that approximately 100,000 people have been displaced in Iran due to the conflicts. It is noted that problems in accessing clean water and sanitation services are creating new risks for public health.

Stating that vulnerable groups are particularly under threat, Ghebreyesus made the following call to the parties:

"Vulnerable populations are at high risk of disease. The WHO calls on all parties to protect civilians and health services, ensure unhindered access to humanitarian aid, and de-escalate tensions. The urgency to act to prevent the collapse of an already fragile health system and for the recovery of affected communities is of critical importance"
