Decline observed in automobile sales in June

The automobile and light commercial vehicle market decreased by 5.3 percent in June compared to the same month last year, falling to 106,238 units. In the January-June period, the market grew by 3.7 percent annually, reaching 577,981 units.

According to data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) for January-June 2024, the total market for automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkey increased by 3.7 percent in the first half of the year compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 577,981 units.

Automobile sales increased by 7.3 percent in the January-June period of this year compared to last year, rising to 462,955 units, while the light commercial vehicle market decreased by 8.7 percent to 115,026 units.

The automobile and light commercial vehicle market in June fell by 5.3 percent compared to the same month in 2023, dropping to 106,238 units.

Last month, automobile sales decreased by 3.6 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, totaling 87,858 units, while the light commercial vehicle market decreased by 12.6 percent to 18,380 units.

The automobile and light commercial vehicle market showed a 40 percent increase compared to the 10-year average sales for June, while the automobile market showed a 45.4 percent increase.

The light commercial vehicle market rose by 18.9 percent compared to the 10-year average sales for June.

Vehicles in the A, B, and C segments, which have lower tax rates, accounted for 87.5 percent of the market. C-segment automobiles held a 55.4 percent share with 256,440 units, while B-segment automobiles held a 31.6 percent share with 146,401 units.

The most preferred body type was SUV automobiles, with a 54.8 percent share and 253,667 units. SUV automobiles were followed by Sedan models with a 26.6 percent share and 123,243 units sold, and H/B automobiles with a 17.4 percent share and 80,760 units sold.

Gasoline-powered automobile sales held a 66 percent share with 305,550 units, hybrid automobile sales held a 14 percent share with 64,921 units, diesel automobile sales held a 10.8 percent share with 50,064 units, electric automobile sales held an 8.5 percent share with 39,405 units, and autogas-powered automobile sales held a 0.7 percent share with 3,015 units.

Furthermore, sales of electric automobiles under 160 kW increased by 237.1 percent, accounting for a 7.2 percent share, while sales of electric automobiles over 160 kW increased by 40 percent, accounting for a 1.4 percent share.

Automobile sales under 1600cc decreased by 3.8 percent, accounting for 76.7 percent of the market; automobile sales in the 1600-2000cc range fell by 3.6 percent, accounting for 0.6 percent; and automobile sales over 2000cc increased by 1.8 percent, accounting for a 0.2 percent share.

Automobiles in the 100-120 g/km range accounted for 26.2 percent of the market with 121,079 units, while automobiles in the 120-140 g/km range accounted for 25.9 percent of the market with 119,908 units.

Automobiles with automatic transmissions accounted for 90.4 percent of total sales with 418,701 units, while those with manual transmissions accounted for 9.6 percent with 44,254 units.

The van body type was the most preferred, with a 71.1 percent share and 81,757 units. The pickup truck body type ranked second with a 15.5 percent share and 17,838 units.
