Until now, vehicle brake lights were only located at the rear. However, research conducted at Graz University of Technology revealed that green-colored brake lights placed on the front of vehicles could reduce the risk of collisions, especially at intersections and side roads. According to the researchers, in a large portion of accidents, drivers fail to notice in time whether oncoming vehicles are braking, which leads to accidents.
Experts examined more than 200 traffic accidents in their experiments. It was observed that in situations where green front brake lights were used, drivers' braking reactions were faster and sudden maneuvers were performed more safely. According to the study, when these lights turn on, other drivers receive the message that "this vehicle is braking" and adjust their position accordingly, acting more consciously.
WHY WAS THE COLOR GREEN CHOSEN?
Although many different colors were tested during the experimental process, green was determined to be the option most easily and naturally perceived by drivers. While red was considered at the beginning of the research, the fact that green suggests the meaning of "go" in traffic psychology and also conveys the message that vehicles will start moving again prevented confusion.
This system, which is currently in the testing phase, could become standard in all newly produced vehicles in the near future. While automobile manufacturers are showing great interest in this innovation, it is stated that governments could make green front brake lights a mandatory traffic rule in the coming years.
