Mercedes-Benz has taken action following the discovery of a significant production defect that threatens safety in the G580 EQ model, the newest member of the all-electric G-Class. According to a statement by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the identified issue involves the possibility of wheel bolts loosening while driving. It is stated that this situation could cause the wheels to detach from the vehicle's body.
It has been announced that the relevant safety defect currently covers 3,734 vehicles. The technical problem in question has caused concern, particularly among users of luxury segment SUVs.
Technical investigations revealed that the bolts can loosen earlier than expected, especially in conditions such as challenging road surfaces or frequent wheel changes. Mercedes-Benz officials advise drivers to take their vehicles to authorized service centers without delay to avoid any risks. It was reported that inspections and, if necessary, part replacements to be performed at service centers will be carried out free of charge. The company also announced that it is investigating whether the error affects further production series.
Whether the electric G-Class models, which went on sale in Turkey with prices starting from 15 million TL, are included in the recall process has not yet been clarified. A statement from Mercedes-Benz Turkey regarding technical checks for models in the domestic market is expected. It was noted that in the event of a potential recall, vehicle owners can apply to the nearest dealership to benefit from free inspection and maintenance services.
This issue, which has emerged in the electric version of the G-Wagon series—a symbol of the brand's prestige—has once again brought sensitivities regarding safety in the premium vehicle segment to the agenda. It is stated that new generation fasteners will be introduced as part of the global campaign launched by the company to ensure G580 EQ users do not experience any grievances. Priority will be given to safety in the inspection and repair processes initiated worldwide.
