Before entering mass production, the 190 E 2.3-16, one of the important models in Mercedes' compact class, was subjected to a grueling endurance test that went down in automotive history. In August 1983, the German manufacturer took three prototypes to the Nardò high-speed track in southern Italy and put the cars through a test program that lasted for days.
The goal was not just to show that the new model could reach high speeds. Mercedes wanted to see how the engine, drivetrain, and other mechanical components would perform under high speed and load for an extended period. For this reason, the Nardò track, which is suitable for high-speed driving due to its circular structure, was chosen.
The most remarkable result of the test was achieved over a distance of 50,000 kilometers. The 190 E 2.3-16 completed this distance in 201 hours, 39 minutes, and 43 seconds. Thus, an average speed of 247.939 km/h was recorded. This achievement was also included in the FIA's world record books.
THE PROGRAM BEHIND THE RECORD
Although the trial is sometimes described in the public eye as a drive that was done "non-stop," the test also included planned pit stops and maintenance procedures. According to Mercedes records, 18 drivers took part in the program. The drivers took the wheel in shifts of approximately 2.5 hours.
Refueling was a natural part of the test, and it is noted that some pit stops were completed in about 20 seconds. In addition, tires, engine oil, and oil filters were changed approximately every 17,000 kilometers; valve clearances were also checked. These details, rather than diminishing the true value of the record, show that the test was conducted as a disciplined endurance operation.
During the drive at Nardò, records were achieved not only at 50,000 kilometers but also at different distances such as 25,000 kilometers and 25,000 miles. However, the data that remained most in the memory of automotive enthusiasts was the ability to maintain an average speed close to 248 km/h for nearly eight days.
With this test, the 190 E 2.3-16 proved its performance and durability with an official record before meeting its customers. The test, which is still remembered today, is considered one of the striking examples of the importance Mercedes places on high-speed durability in its model development process.
